At the CBD Clinic we get asked all the time about possible drug interactions. It is an important question to ask when you are looking to use a cannabis product for medicinal reasons. Cannabinoids interact with our Endocannabinoid System, which is now known to be a fundamental part of our body, but for CBD to access that system it needs to be metabolized by Cytochrome P450 enzymes in your liver.
These enzymes may be inhibited or amplified by CBD, THC and other plant cannabinoids, thereby reducing or prolonging the activity of another drug. Drug interactions are much more likely with high dose CBD therapy than other forms of cannabis consumption. We always reccommend starting low and slow and if you are on medications that interact with CBD make sure you are monitored in your consumption. We have had several people come back and tell us that with careful monitoring they have been able to successfully reduce or change the medications they were one because of CBD. With those changes come with the additional benefit of reducing the side-effects that come with many medications.
